How to play Georoute
Georoute is a free geography game where you plan a route between two real cities. Choose each stop and vehicle, then compare your result with the best route for that round. Play solo in your browser or race friends in a multiplayer room.
Start your first route
- Choose Play now on the homepage, or open Choose route & mode to select your start city, finish city and objective.
- Find A, your starting city, and B, your destination. Glowing cities show places you can reach on your next hop.
- Click or tap a reachable city. Compare the available vehicles and their time and cost, then confirm the hop.
- Repeat until you reach B. Use Undo to revise your last hop or Clear to rebuild the route.
- Submit your completed route to see your score and compare it with the optimal route.
Three game modes
Fastest: minimize the total travel time of your route. A lower fare does not improve your score in this mode.
Cheapest: minimize the total fare. A slow ship can be a better choice than a quick flight when saving money is the objective.
Budget: find the fastest route that stays within the round’s spending limit. An over-budget route cannot earn a valid score.
Cars, boats, ships, planes and helicopters
Vehicle choices depend on the connections available between cities. Cars use the road network, boats and ships connect ports, and planes use air connections. Helicopters can connect nearby places within the game’s range limit. Compare the options shown for each hop: changing vehicles adds boarding time and cost.
Hints and scoring
You get three hints per round. A hint names the next city on the optimal route if you are still following that route. If you have left it, undo a hop before asking again. Undo and Clear do not replenish spent hints.
A valid route within 1% of the optimum earns 1,000 points. Routes outside that margin earn fewer points. In fastest and budget modes, the comparison uses travel time; cheapest mode compares fares. The travel time shown for your route is separate from the time you spend planning it.
